Ponniyin Selvan Movie News


Director Mani Ratnam signs three big names for his next project based on the literary masterpiece by Kalki. The historical epic Ponniyin Selvan has fascinated many stars including legendary actor MGR and Ulaga Nayagan Kamal Haasan. They dreamt in vain of converting the classic into celluloid. Mani Ratnam also nurtured this dream. The prolific director has been toying with the idea of bringing `Amarar' Kalki's timeless classic to the silver screen for the last five years Ponniyin Selvan, a 20th century, Tamil historical novel is a romantic story, which with real historical char acters and incidents. It deals with the fortunes of he culturally rich Chola Empire during the 10th century.

The ace filmmaker has completed the groundwork and is all set to launch his Magnum Opus. Apparently, Mani after working meticu lously on the novel has etched a neat script, encompassing all the five volumes of the novel in just eighty scenes.

A few months back, Mani roped in the well-known writer Jayamohan for scripting the dialogues for a whopping sum, which according to industry sources is the highest remuneration ever for a dialogue writer.

To play the main protagonist in the multi-starrer, Mani had already initiated talks with Ilaya Thalapathy Vijay. Vijay is to enact the role of Vandhiyadevan, the hero who is an adventurous, handsome and happy-go-lucky young man. For another lead role, Mani recently signed Mahesh Babu, known as the `Prince' of T'Town. The Tollywood star tweeted --"Now for some big news. Met Mani sir this morning, yes the legendary Mani Ratnam. My dream is coming true finally. I will be working in a Mani Ratnam film. One of the happiest days in my life!" Now, the big news is Arya, who is riding the crest since Naan Kadavul has been approached by Mani to portray another of the historical characters. Sources confirmed that the actor had met the Roja director at his office recently and given his nod to be part of this period flick, even though Mani k, even though Mani did not narrate the story to him. Obviously, the Obviously, the `Mani Factor'lures everyone into his project. After all, `it is every actor's dream to work with Mani Ratnam at least once.'
